Overview

Ruaha National Park was officially established in the early 1950s, covering an area of about 10,300 square kilometers. It was primarily created to protect the unique Miombo woodlands, which are quite distinctive due to the dominance of tree species like Julbernardia and Brachystegia. These woodlands provide a rich habitat for a wide variety of wildlife.

Over time, the park was expanded to help safeguard the main water catchment area of the Ruaha ecosystem. This has played an important role in maintaining a steady water supply for wildlife and in preventing the Great Ruaha River from drying up.
