Days

Overview

Mount Meru, the second-highest mountain in Tanzania, offers a truly memorable trekking experience for those looking for stunning landscapes, quieter trails, and a satisfying challenge. While it’s often overlooked in favor of Mount Kilimanjaro, Meru stands tall at 4,566 meters and is rich in varied ecosystems, wildlife, and sweeping views from the top.

This 3-day trek takes you through dense forests alive with birds and monkeys, across open moorlands, and up toward the striking crater rim. The final ascent is especially exciting, with a narrow ridge walk along the crater’s edge that rewards you with breathtaking sunrise views over the plains and a distant glimpse of Kilimanjaro.

With experienced guides leading the way and an armed park ranger accompanying the group due to the presence of wildlife, this trek is ideal either as preparation for Kilimanjaro or as a standalone adventure for those who enjoy nature and hiking.

Itinerary

Day 1 : Momella Gate to Forest Hut
Your Mount Meru journey begins with a scenic drive to Momella Gate in Arusha National Park, where you’ll complete registration and meet your experienced mountain team, including an armed ranger who will accompany you for safety. The hike starts across open grasslands, where you might spot giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, and warthogs along the way. As you continue gaining elevation, the landscape gradually transforms into a dense montane forest filled with bird songs and the sounds of monkeys. Keep an eye out for colobus monkeys in the trees and bushbucks moving through the bushes. The trail is calm and immersive, offering a smooth introduction to the trek. After around 5 to 6 hours of hiking, you’ll arrive at a cozy hut set within the forest, where you’ll relax, have dinner, and spend the night.
Day 2 : Midnight Climb to Socialist Peak and Descent to Momella Gate
Your summit push begins in the early morning hours, typically around 2:00 AM. With headlamps on and warm layers in place, you’ll make your way up steep paths toward Rhino Point (3,800 m), then continue along a narrow ridge leading to Socialist Peak (4,566 m), the summit of Mount Meru. As the sun rises, you’ll be treated to incredible views across the Tanzanian plains, with Mount Kilimanjaro visible in the distance. From the top, you’ll enjoy sweeping views of the crater, ash cone, and surrounding landscapes. After celebrating and capturing some memorable photos, you’ll descend back to a hut for a short rest and brunch before continuing down to Momella Gate. Passing once again through the lush forest, you’ll complete your trek and be transferred back, bringing this memorable adventure to a close with Joanne Adventures.
Day 3: Trek Across Moorlands to Shira 1 Camp
Today’s trek takes you across a wide plateau of grassy moorland and heather, dotted with volcanic rock formations. The goal for the day is Shira 1 Camp, where you may catch glimpses of Kibo Peak rising above the clouds. You’ll gain a fair amount of altitude, and some sections of the trail can be quite steep.
