Mount Meru Hiking – 4 Days

Mount Meru Hiking – 4 Days

4
Days

Overview

Mount Meru rises to an impressive 4,566 meters, making it Tanzania’s second-highest mountain and a true hidden gem for trekkers in East Africa. While many travelers head straight for Kilimanjaro, Meru offers a similarly exciting experience—just with fewer people, diverse scenery, and amazing chances to spot wildlife along the way.

This 4-day trek is designed to be gradual and comfortable, giving you plenty of time to adjust to the altitude while enjoying the journey. The route passes through Arusha National Park, starting in open savannah and dense rainforest where you might see giraffes, buffaloes, and even colobus monkeys. As you climb higher, the surroundings shift into alpine meadows and rugged ridges, leading up to an unforgettable sunrise at Socialist Peak.

Throughout the trek, experienced mountain guides lead the way, and an armed park ranger accompanies the group for safety due to the wildlife in the area. Accommodation is in simple yet cozy mountain huts, which makes the climb easier compared to camping treks.

With sweeping views of the Meru crater, the ash cone below, and even Kilimanjaro visible in the distance, Mount Meru is perfect for those looking for a shorter adventure that still feels incredibly rewarding.

Itinerary

Day 1 : Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut
In the morning, you’ll be picked up from your hotel and driven to Arusha National Park. After completing the necessary registration at Momella Gate, you’ll begin your trek alongside your guide and an armed ranger, as the area is rich in wildlife. The trail through the forest is particularly beautiful, with towering strangler figs and occasional clearings where you might spot buffalo grazing. By late afternoon, you’ll pass a scenic viewpoint before continuing on to a hut, where you’ll enjoy dinner and settle in for the night.
Day 2 : Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut
The next day starts with a gradual hike from the forest zone, eventually opening up into the alpine desert landscape as you approach a hut around lunchtime. In the afternoon, you have the option to hike up Little Meru for impressive panoramic views before returning to the hut for dinner and rest.
Day 3: Saddle Hut – Socialist Peak (4,566 m) – Miriakamba Hut
Around midnight, you’ll begin your summit attempt. The climb is steep and demanding, taking you past Rhino Point (3,800 m) and Cobra Point (4,350 m) as you follow a narrow ridge with the help of headlamps. Reaching Socialist Peak (4,566 m) at sunrise is a truly rewarding experience, with incredible views and Mount Kilimanjaro visible above the clouds. After taking in the scenery and capturing some photos, you’ll descend back to the hut for a short break, then continue down to another hut where you’ll spend your final night on the mountain. This is a long but fulfilling day, typically lasting 10 to 12 hours.
Day 4: Miriakamba Hut – Momella Gate – Return to Hotel
After breakfast the following morning, you’ll make your way back down along the same scenic route used on your ascent. The descent is more relaxed, giving you extra time to enjoy the surroundings and possibly spot more wildlife. Upon reaching Momella Gate, you’ll receive your summit certificate and say goodbye to your mountain team, marking the end of your journey with Joanne Adventures.
